West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while referring to historical figure Mir Jafar, cautioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi by stating that Home Minister Amit Shah has been behaving like an "acting PM". While criticising the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, she stated that the revision was being conducted to remove the names of non-BJP voters. The chief minister further warned PM Modi of a possible betrayal by stating that "morning tells how the day will be". Mir Jafar betrayed the ruler Sirajuddaulah, the Nawab of pre-partition Bengal-Bihar, in the Battle of Plassey in 1757.

While returning from the landslide-affected regions, the chief minister advised PM Modi to not put "too much faith" in Amit Shah. “I want to tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to put too much faith in Amit Shah. He may one day become his Mir Jafar,” CM Banerjee told the reporters in Kolkata. She further questioned the intention behind conducting the SIR while the state has been witnessing natural calamities.

"Tell me, we are currently reeling under natural calamities, heavy rains, celebrating festivals and so on. Can the SIR exercise be completed within a fortnight and can fresh names be uploaded in that period under the current circumstances?" Banerjee stated. The chief ministry also claimed that the Home Minister Amit Shah is behaving like an "acting Prime Minister" of the country.

"He is behaving like he is the acting Prime Minister of this country. But the PM is aware (of what he's doing), I am sorry to say," CM Banerjee asserted. "We can request the Prime Minister not to trust Amit Shah always. One day, he will turn out to be your biggest Mir Jafar. Be alert while you have the time, because mornings tell you how the day will be," she added.
