AMRITPAL Singh, the Punjab De Chief, who had been on the run since March 18, was arrested by Punjab police in Moga on Sunday morning. The police nabbed the pro-Khalistan preacher, Singh, from Gurudwara Janam Asthan Sant Khalsa. However, the Gurdwara cleric claimed that Amritpal surrendered, and he himself informed the police about his presence. "Amritpal Singh came to the Rodewal Gurdwara on Saturday night. He himself informed the police about his presence and that he will surrender this morning at 7 a.m.," claimed Singh Sahib Giani Jasbir Singh Rode of Rodewal Gurdwara in Moga, reported news agency ANI.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Police Inspector General of Police, Sukhchain Singh Gill, issued a clarification and said that Amritpal was arrested but did not surrender himself. The police have already invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the Khalistan sympathiser, Amritpal Singh.
Amritpal Singh and his relationship with Rode Village
Rode is the ancestral village of Khalistani idealogue Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Singh was also often called Bhindranwale 2.O by his supporters. He used to dress up like Bhindranwale and also called him his inspiration. Bhindranwale was killed during Operation Blue Star in 1984. Even now, the family of Bhindranwale, including his brothers and nephews, lives in Rode village, and the place where he was born has been turned into a gurudwara, from where Amritpal Singh was arrested by police.

Amritpal Singh chose Rode both for his Dastarbandi ceremony and also to take over as the head of Waris Punjab De (WPD) in September last year. It is to be mentioned here that "Dastarbandi" is a person's first ceremonial tying of the turban in the Sikh community.
The 30-year-old Amritpal Singh was born in 1993 and is the second leader of the Punjabi-centric social organisation, Waris Panjab De. Singh, who hails from Jallur village in Punjab, was living in Dubai, helping out with the transport business of his relatives. After the death of Deep Sidhu, the former Waris Punjab De chief, Singh, was named as the next chief. He was appointed as the second chief in September 2022 at an event in Rode Village, the village of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
The Sant Khalsa Gurudwara has emerged once again as the bastion of WPD activities, 38 years after Bhindranwale died in Operation Blue Star in 1984.
