In the 2019 assembly elections, the ruling YSRCP secured a landslide victory, winning 151 out of the 175 seats. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) managed to secure only 23 seats initially, which later reduced to 19 after the resignation of Ganta Srinivas Rao and the defection of three MLAs to the YSRCP post-election.

The 2019 polls marked a significant milestone for Andhra Pradesh as it was the first assembly election since the state's bifurcation in 2014, leading to the formation of Telangana. The current tenure of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, under the leadership of Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, is scheduled to conclude in April.

The ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, faces stiff competition from the three-party alliance comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), and Jana Sena

As part of the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance, the BJP is set to contest from 10 seats, Jana Sena from 21, and TDP from the remaining 144 Assembly seats. Jana Sena chief and film actor Pawan Kalyan announced his candidacy from the Pithapuram constituency, while TDP has named 128 candidates so far.

On March 16, the YSRCP released its full list of 175 candidates for the Assembly polls.

During the previous Assembly elections, TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena contested separately. The TDP and BJP contested independently, while Jana Sena formed an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Left parties.

The TDP's exit from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2018, was due to disagreements over granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh.
