A Class 10 student from Kakinada district in Andhra Pradesh is said to have attempted suicide, allegedly due to mental harassment by the school’s principal and vice-principal.
The student, named Blessy (14), is said to have faced harassment from the school authorities over the course of two days. The incident took place on November 14 but has only recently come to light, according to a report by India Today.
Blessy, from Burugupudi village in Kirlampudi mandal, reportedly could not cope with the stress and fear made by the principal and jumped from the hostel building. She sustained serious injuries, including fractures to both legs, spinal cord damage, and head trauma.
The student was hospitalised at Kakinada Government Hospital for treatment, and her parents have lodged a formal complaint, calling for strict action to be taken against the principal and vice-principal.
According to Blessy’s parents, she was unable to endure the mental pressure and fear and thus jumped from the hostel building. Some of her classmates have stated they are “uncertain” about the events, while her parents accuse school staff of pressuring students to claim that she “slipped on the stairs.”
Harassment cases like this have been rising across the country.
In a separate incident, a Class 10 student at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in Krishnapuram village, Marripadu mandal, SPSR Nellore district, reportedly took her own life on November 19, allegedly due to harassment by teachers, as reported by The Hindu.
The student’s parents claimed that teachers made inappropriate and demeaning comments towards her, even when she was suffering from menstrual cramps. Her father has urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into her death. The family has also staged a protest at the school, demanding justice.
The Parents Association of Andhra Pradesh (PAAP) has expressed outrage at what they describe as “negligence” by the government, especially as several students in the district have died by suicide this year due to similar issues.
Earlier, a Class 10 student in Delhi also jumped from the platform of an elevated Metro station, leaving behind a suicide note that reportedly detailed ongoing mental harassment and humiliation by her school.
