In a big crackdown on social media posts targeting political leaders and their families, the Andhra Pradesh government has filed over 100 police cases. As of now, 39 individuals have been arrested and 67 notices have been issued for content deemed likely to incite conflict between groups, as per NDTV.
Most of them have been booked under BNS sections related to promoting enmity between different groups, defamation, public mischief, and criminal conspiracy as well as IT Act sections related to morphing images and posting derogatory content.
Many such posts, making the rounds across social media platforms, targeted Chief Minister Naidu's wife Bhuvaneshwari, his son and minister Lokesh's wife Brahmini, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's daughters and also state Congress chief YS Sharmila.
YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged his party leaders had got over 650 notices. The party said 49 people have been arrested in a week.
He claimed that they would continue to post on social media as Naidu had failed to fulfil promises. "Why not file a 420 case against you? If questioned, they say they will file cases and make arrests. Our party leaders, activists and social media activists, including me, will definitely post against you," he said.
Besides, police have summoned film producer Ram Gopal Varma for sharing morphed images of CM and Dy CM. Varma has been asked to appear before the police next week. The action against him was taken after a complaint by one Ramalingam.
