Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the incident at the Supreme Court on Monday, where a lawyer allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai. The Prime Minister said the act has “angered every Indian” and expressed appreciation for the CJI’s calm response during the disruption.

The Prime Minister also praised the CJI for maintaining composure during the tense situation. “I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to the values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution,” he added.

Lawyer Tries To Attack CJI

The incident occurred during court proceedings when a man dressed in a lawyer’s robe reportedly attempted to throw a shoe or what some witnesses said appeared to be a roll of paper at the CJI. Security personnel immediately intervened and escorted the individual out of the courtroom.

According to reports, the man, identified as advocate Rakesh Kishore, shouted slogans such as “Sanatan Dharam ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan” (“India will not tolerate disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma”) while being removed. Proceedings were briefly halted before resuming.

CJI’s Response

The protest is believed to be linked to CJI Gavai’s recent comment in court during a hearing related to the reconstruction of a Lord Vishnu idol in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. The CJI had remarked, “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now,” which sparked controversy on social media.

Despite the attempted attack, CJI Gavai urged the court to continue its work. “Don’t get distracted by all this. These things do not affect me,” he said, asking lawyers to proceed with their arguments.

Kapil Sibal Seeks Public Condemnation

Reacting to the incident earlier, senior advocate Kapil Sibal criticised the “silence” of PM Modi called the behaviour of the lawyer “uncivilised”.

“The uncivilised behaviour of a member of the Supreme Court Bar must be publicly condemned by one and all since it is an affront to the majesty of the court,” Sibal said in a post on X.

The Delhi Police is likely to review the security arrangements at the Supreme Court following the incident.
