Annamalai's Birthday: Will Former Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Announce A New Political Party Today?

Tamil Nadu: As former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K Annamalai turned 42 on Thursday, rumours about his future in the party intensified. Speculation is mounting that he could announce a new political party or movement, charting an independent political course outside the BJP.

Annamalai Met Amit Shah

This buzz comes days after Annamalai met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on June 2. While no official statement followed the high-level meeting, reports indicate that the BJP leadership asked him to put his resignation plans on hold.

According to a report by News18, Annamalai had submitted his resignation during a prior meeting with BJP National President Nitin Nabin.

Annamalai has found himself in political limbo since the BJP replaced him with Nainar Nagendran as the Tamil Nadu unit chief, a move that paved the way for the party to revive its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Furious speculation about his future in the party, Annamalai said that he could clarify his stance shortly. "Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days," he told reporters before leaving for Delhi.

BJP Under Annamalai

Annamalai joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020, and within just 10 months, he became the youngest president of the party's Tamil Nadu unit.

Despite losing in the 2021 Assembly election, he was instrumental in expanding the party's footprint in the state. Under his leadership, the BJP secured four seats in 2021, marking its return to the Tamil Nadu Assembly after nearly two decades.

In contrast, under the leadership of Nainar Nagendran, the BJP managed to win only a single seat in the recent 2026 Assembly elections.

Furthermore, he is widely credited for boosting the BJP's vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to 11.24 per cent, up from 3.66 per cent in 2019, the report added.

K Annamalai's Posters Fuel Speculation Over New Political Party

Adding to the political buzz, posters supporting Annamalai surfaced across parts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore and Madurai, without featuring images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi or any other BJP leaders.

Instead, several of the posters feature Annamalai alongside actors Rajinikanth and Ajith, reinforcing speculation that his supporters are backing him for an independent political path.

With his supporters awaiting his next move and the BJP top brass remaining silent, all eyes are on the former state chief. The question remains: Will Annamalai use his birthday to make a major political announcement?
