Anurag Kashyap, an acknowledged filmmaker in the Indian film industry, issued a public apology for his controversial remark on the Brahmin community after intense backlash. Kashyap made the comment amid an ongoing row over a movie on social reformer Jyotiba Phule, highlighting caste oppression.

Kashyap shared a lengthy note on Friday, clarifying his intent behind his remark. “No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, or friends," he wrote, referring to the threats his loved ones allegedly received following the remark.

The film director noted that he was not apologetic for his post, but a particular line in his post that was allegedly ‘taken out of context’ and fueled hatred. “No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar. So, what has been said cannot be taken back — and I won’t take it back. But if you want to abuse someone, direct it at me. My family has neither said anything nor do they ever speak out (sic),” Kashyap added.

Urging the community to treat women better, the film director added, “So, if it’s an apology you’re looking for, then this is my apology. Brahmins, please spare the women — even the scriptures teach this much decency, not just Manusmriti. Decide for yourselves what kind of Brahmins you truly are. As for me, I offer my apology (sic)."

The controversy began with a reply that Kashyap gave to a user who commented, ‘Brahmin tumhare baap hain’ (Brahmins are your father). The film director, in his response, said, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga.. koi problem? (I will urinate on Brahmins… any problem?) (sic)." The post fueled anger and reaction from several Brahmin organisations, including demands for an apology and threats to Kashyap’s family members.

Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey hit out at the filmmaker and said that the latter was a ‘scumbag’. “This vile scumbag @anuragkashyap72 thinks he can spit filth on the entire Brahmin community and get away with it? If he doesn’t issue a public apology immediately, I swear I’ll make sure he finds no peace anywhere. Enough of this gutter mouth’s hate, we won’t stay silent!” the Union minister of state for Coal and Mines said in an X post.

Hindu Organisations Alleged That Film Shows Community In Negative Light

The incident occurred in the wake of a debate around the film "Phule," starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa. Initially scheduled for release on April 11, the movie's premiere was postponed to April 25 following the Censor Board's recommendation for changes. The Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj and other groups objected, alleging the film's portrayal of the Brahmin community was negative.
