The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) requesting action against social media influencer Elvish Yadav. The complaint alleges that Yadav made "derogatory and racial" remarks about Chum Darang, an actor and finalist of 'Bigg Boss 18'. The action came after Yadav’s remarks erupted into a controversy.
APSCW Chairperson Kenjum Pakam has written a letter to the National Commission for Women (NCW), accusing social media influencer Elvish Yadav of making derogatory and racially insensitive remarks about Chum Darang, the former Miss Arunachal and Bigg Boss contestant, in a viral video. Pakam stated that Yadav’s comments not only insult Darang but also demean the entire women’s community of Northeast India.
“Elvish Yadav's comment on social media tarnished the reputation of Chum Darang in particular and women of North East in general. Such behaviour and derogatory comments create a pervasive sense of fear and intimidation amongst women of the northeast who are pursuing their dreams in the film industry of Bollywood making them vulnerable and marginalised,” the letter read.
The Chairperson of APSCW, in a letter to the NCW, expressed deep concern over the situation and urged the national body to take suo-motu cognizance of Elvish Yadav's racial comment. The letter called for justice for Chum Darang and emphasized the need to address the broader impact on societal sentiments.
Reacting to Yadav’s remarks, Chum Darang in an Instagram post said, "Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun'. Mocking someone's achievements is not "banter". It's time we draw the line between humour and hate."
Criticizing Yadav for slamming her achievements, Darang said, "What's even more disappointing is that this wasn't just about my ethnicity. My hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected."
