A court in Assam's Charaideo district on Monday handed down life sentences to 23 individuals for the murder of a woman accused of practising witchcraft 13 years ago.

Charaideo District and Sessions Judge Abubakkar Siddique convicted 12 men and 11 women for the crime, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 each, according to PTI.

Additionally, the court directed the convicts to pay Rs 8 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family.

The 2012 incident triggered widespread outrage and resulted in a lengthy trial that spanned 13 years.

According to police, the victim was brutally tortured and ultimately set on fire by a group of people in Jalha village, Charaideo, over suspicions of practising witchcraft.
