Strong tremors were felts across the Northeast, West Bengal and neighbouring country Bhutan after an earthquake of 5.8 magitude hit Assam on Sunday.

The epicenter of the earthquake has been located 15 km from Udalguri city and hit at around 4:41 PM. The National Centre of Seismology (NCS) stated that the quake's location was at 26.78 North Latitude and 92.33 East Logitude, which is in Udalguri district. The depth of the earthquake was 5 km.

The 5.8 magnitude on Richter Scale is considered moderate in nature, with a potential of none to mild damage. So far, no loss of life and property has been reported. This latest quake comes after a natural disaster of 3.5 magnitude hit Assam on September 2.

The quake was mild and didn't cause any trouble for the region, which is in the high seismic zone. The high seismic zones are the region which are prone to frequent earthquakes.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, said, "The epicentre (of the earthquake) was near Udalguri. So far, there has been no report of any major damage or loss of life. We are actively monitoring the situation."

Union Minister Sarbanand Sonowal also took to X and wrote, "Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone's safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert!"

The earthquake was followed by more jolts within a couple of hours in Assam. At 4:58 PM, an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 hit Udalguri. The epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 5 km.

At 5:21 PM, another earthquake of magnitude 2.8 hit Assam's Sonitpur at a depth of 5 km. Over half an hour later, at 6:11 PM, Udalguri was again rocked with an earthquake, but of 2.7 magnitude on the Richter Scale.

The Northeast also felt tremors on Saturday when an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck Myanmar, as reported by the NCS.

The Myanmar earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. On September 4, Myanmar was rocked with a 4.7 magnitude earthquake, occurred at a depth of 120 km.

It is worth mentioning that shallow earthquakes are often more dangerous than deep ones, as the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures and greater casualties.
