Assam Jail News:  Five prisoners, charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, escaped from Assam's Morigaon District jail in the night by breaking through metal rods and scaling a 20-foot wall using bedsheets and lungis. The incident took place between 1 to 2 am on Friday night, causing an immediate alert in the district with the administration ordering magisterial enquiry.

The state government has suspended Jailor Prashanta Saikia from his duties and roped in two assistant jailors to temporarily oversee the functioning of the prison, OneIndia reported on Saturday.

A separate departmental investigation into the 'jailbreak' has been constituted under Inspector General (Prisons) Pubali Gohain, who will ascertain the lapses and the incident.

Inmates Identified, Shocking Jailbreak Discovered

The prisoners, who fled the jail, have been identified as Saifuddin, Ziarul Islam, Nur Islam, Mafidul, and Abdul Rashid. Shocking details about their daring escape also emerged. They managed to cut open the iron rods of the barrack gate and scaled a 20-foot wall of the prison compound using bedsheets, blankets and their lungis, the report claimed.

Manhunt Launched

The district Superintendent of Police of Morigaon, Hemanta Kumar Das, said that a massive manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fugitives. "We will interrogate some of the jail inmates tomorrow. Everything will come out in the investigation," he reportedly said.

District Magistrate Devashis Sarma said that the runaway inmates were from Tezpur in the Sonitpur district, as well as Lahorighat and Moirabari in Morigaon district.
