Three mosque committees in Assam’s Karimganj district have banned the burial of people who have died due to drug abuse or the people who charge exorbitant interest rates from borrowers. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Maizdihi cemetery committee on Tuesday. 

The mosque committees also decided that the relatives of the offenders would also be denied the right to bury their dead at the cemetery. The mosque committees have also called for a social boycott of those who are involved in these illegal activities.

The ban applies to the use and sale of heroin, yaba pills and cannabis, as well as the lending of money at high-interest rates. The mosque committees said that they wanted to show their commitment to fight against the evils of drug addiction and exploitation.

The Maizdihi area has three mosques, namely Masjid-e-Maizdihi, Masjid-e-Madina and Masjid-e-Noor. The cemetery committee is composed of representatives from all three mosques.
