Assam: The Assam cabinet has decided to stop issuing Aadhaar cards to those above 18 years of age in the state. This decision, announced at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining the identity document.
The Chief Minister clarified that Aadhaar card distribution has exceeded 100 per cent in certain districts, raising serious concerns. An investigation is necessary to determine who has received these additional cards, Jagran.com reported.

How Does The New Process Work?
Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister emphasised that while the restriction will be strictly enforced, some exceptions may be granted under special circumstances.
- If an individual above 18 years of age applies for an Aadhaar Card, the District Deputy Commissioner will have to thoroughly investigate their eligibility.
- The district administration will then submit a specific proposal to the state government, which will ultimately decide whether the applicant is eligible to receive the document.
Regular Process For Those Under 18
The restriction does not apply to minors, and the Aadhaar Card process for children under 18 years of age will continue as normal. This decision primarily aims to prevent the illegal infiltration of Bangladeshis.
Relief For Tea Plantation And Tribal Communities
To maintain social balance and inclusiveness, the state government has temporarily exempted tea plantation workers and Scheduled Tribes from this immediate restriction, as many of these communities still do not have Aadhaar cards. This relief, however, is temporary.
The Chief Minister clarified that this restriction will apply to adults from these communities, starting April 1, 2027. This move shows the government's commitment to safeguarding the state's security and demographics.
