The Indian National Congress formed a committee to oversee and manage the properties held by the party across the country. The new initiative was launched after a suggestion from Congress leader Vijay Inder Singla. The party has appointed Singla as the AICC-in-charge of the newly established division. The grand old party has released a notification in this regard.
Notably, a recent dispute between the INC and Janata Dal (Secular), over the ownership of a property in Hubbali, prompted the party to make this decision. The dispute has now escalated into a legal battle between the two parties.
Quoting sources from Congress, News18 reported that the party owns over 2,000 properties across the country, with several of them either damaged or occupied illegally. The party owns 200 such properties in Jharkhand alone, with similar cases in states like Gujarat, Punjab, Bengal, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

The party intends to monetise the lost properties as it has long argued that, unlike the BJP, INC suffers from a lack of funds.
“This department will get properties across the country belonging to the Congress regularised and monetised," News 18 quoted Singla, the In-charge of the newly constituted department, as saying.
However, reclaiming the properties would prove to be a task as Congress’ sources, quoted by News18, admit that documents are missing or original allottees are unavailable in many instances. The center’s recent move regarding the Waqf properties is anticipated to be the motivation behind the party’s decision.
