The Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) on Tuesday appointed Atishi as legislative party leader in Delhi. She would replace outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who announced he was relinquishing the top post and would only accept it after being vindicated by the public. He sought a public mandate in his favour in the upcoming Assembly polls.

In her first address after the big announcement, Atishi said she was helming the Delhi government for a few months and their main aim was to make Arvind Kejriwal CM again. She said the government will run under the guidance of Kejriwal.

"People of Delhi, AAP MLAs and I - as the CM for a few months till elections, will work with just one goal. We have to make Arvind Kejriwal the CM of Delhi once again. As long as I am shouldering this huge responsibility, I will have just one goal...I will try to protect the people of Delhi and run the Government under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal," she said while speaking to media.

The AAP MLAs unanimously accepted party supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s proposal of appointing Atishi as his successor in a legislative party meeting on Tuesday morning. Kejriwal will hand over his resignation to LG at 4:30 pm today. The AAP will thereafter stake claim to form the government.

The BJP has criticised AAP’s move to elevate Atishi, alleging that her family was against the capital punishment given to Afzal Guru. AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal also rebuked the move, calling it a sad day for Delhi.

“Today is a very sad day for Delhi. Today, a woman whose family fought a long battle to save terrorist Afzal Guru from being hanged is being made the Chief Minister of Delhi. His parents wrote mercy petitions to the Honorable President to save terrorist Afzal Guru. According to him, Afzal Guru was innocent and was framed as part of a political conspiracy. Although Atishi Marlena is just a 'dummy CM', still this issue is related to the security of the country. May God protect Delhi!” she posted on X with a purported video of Atishi’s mother.

After the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal from the post of Chief Minister, there may be a reshuffle in the entire cabinet. In such situation, it is possible that two new ministers can also take oath.
