- TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee attacked in West Bengal.
- Opposition leaders condemn BJP, show renewed unity.
- Incident seen as catalyst for INDIA bloc revival.
The attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in West Bengal appears to be acting as a catalyst for the INDIA bloc, bringing the opposition parties together. The alliance had recently faced significant setbacks, following the BJP's strong performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections and the split between the Congress and the DMK in Tamil Nadu.
However, the attack on Abhishek Banerjee appears to be bringing the opposition parties together once again.
Attack On Abhishek Banerjee
Abhishek Banerjee, one of the party's most prominent leaders, was attacked in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, where he had travelled to meet the post-poll violence victims and their families. The TMC accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being behind the attack.
Despite internal differences and tensions, several opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, utilised the incident to target the BJP, presenting a united front over the incident.
Opposition Leaders Target BJP
"Strongly condemn the shocking attack on MP Shri Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, as he went to meet the families affected by post-poll violence in the state," Kharge said, alleging "a deliberate lack of adequate police protection for a prominent opposition leader."
Akhilesh Yadav termed the incident a 'heinous conspiracy' aimed at creating unrest, accusing the BJP of encouraging political violence.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, "By getting a murderous attack carried out on senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, the anarchic BJP government has proved that it can do nothing except indulge in hateful and violent politics."
Arvind Kejriwal strongly condemned the attack on Abhishek Banerjee, stating, "There is a deeply worrying breakdown of law and order in West Bengal at present."
"High praise to Abhishek Banerjee ji for standing strong and supporting the grieving family during this tragedy," he added.
All Eyes On INDIA Bloc Meeting
Political analysts believe that the recent attack on Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee has increased sympathy for Mamata Banerjee among opposition parties. This has prompted many alliance partners, including the Congress, to openly extend their support to her.
In light of these developments, the TMC supremo has proposed convening an INDIA bloc meeting during the first week of June. However, Congress leaders indicated that several key members are unavailable at that time, leading to a postponement of the meeting, the report added.
Congress-DMK Dynamics And The TVK Factor
According to the report, citing sources, Congress aims to maintain cooperation with the DMK within Parliament. However, the future of their relationship outside of it remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, political observers are closely monitoring actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Observers are waiting to see if and when the TVK becomes part of the INDIA bloc, as well as when the alliance will schedule its next meeting.
