Bengaluru Police on Sunday arrested Atul Subhash’s wife Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha and brother Anurag in connection with the suicide of the Bengaluru techie. Nikita was detained in Gurugram, while her family members were apprehended in Prayagraj.
The arrests followed allegations of abetment of suicide, with the family accused of demanding Rs 3 crore to withdraw cases against Atul and Rs 30 lakh for visitation rights to his son. Bengaluru Police collaborated with their Uttar Pradesh counterparts to trace the accused, who are now in judicial custody.
Atul Subhash, a resident of Munnekollal in Bengaluru, was found dead in his apartment on December 9. His death was accompanied by a 24-page suicide note and a video accusing his wife, her family, a family court judge and a court officer of misconduct, including bribery.
The note, which triggered widespread debate about the harassment of married men and misuse of dowry laws, revealed Atul's alleged ordeal. He accused Nikita and her family of harassment, citing financial demands and emotional abuse. Atul expressed his love for his son and requested his ashes not be immersed until justice was served.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivakumar confirmed that Atul faced multiple cases in Uttar Pradesh and attributed his suicide to harassment by his wife and her family. "His wife and her family demanded money and harassed him, prompting the suicide," the official stated.
Days after Atul Subhash’s suicide, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued an eight-point guideline for courts handling divorce and alimony cases. These include evaluating the social and economic status of both spouses, the future needs of the wife and children, employment status and financial responsibilities.
Supreme Court's Eight-Point Guideline
- The social and economic status of both husband and wife.
- The basic needs of the wife and children in the future.
- The qualifications and employment status of both parties.
- Sources of income and property ownership.
- The wife’s standard of living while living with her in-laws.
- Whether the wife left her job to care for the family.
- A reasonable amount for legal expenses for a non-working wife.
- The husband’s financial status, including earnings, responsibilities and ability to pay alimony.
