Kolkata News: A heated confrontation occurred on Friday between West Bengal minister Babul Supriyo, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Bridge. The dispute arose over allegations of car honking, leading to accusations and a public altercation.

Supriyo, a TMC MLA, claimed that his vehicle was stopped and that he was verbally abused by Gangopadhyay. In response, Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge, accused Supriyo of using foul language first. The BJP MP stated, “Babul Supriyo stopped my car and used inappropriate language,” asserting that the honking that bothered the minister came from a vehicle behind his own, not from Supriyo's car.

Gangopadhyay, alleged that Supriyo had also stepped out of his car to confront him. Witnesses captured videos of the encounter, which drew a large crowd on the bridge as tensions escalated.

Supriyo, currently the West Bengal Information Technology and Electronics minister, confronted Gangopadhyay, stating, “I may not have 'MLA' on my car, but you have 'MP' written on yours and are disturbing others.”

The argument intensified on the Hubli bridge, where the two leaders came close to physical confrontation. The scene drew attention from onlookers and the situation was eventually brought under control by nearby police officers.

This latest incident adds to the ongoing tension between the TMC and BJP. Supriyo, who was once a minister in the Narendra Modi government, joined the TMC in September 2021, following a split from the BJP.

This incident is not the first clash between TMC and BJP leaders, a previous altercation occurred in October 2024 during a parliamentary committee meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, involving TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee and Gangopadhyay.
