The All India Institute Of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) on Monday decided to hand over 28 unclaimed bodies of Balasore train accident victims to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for their cremation. Talking to the news agency ANI, AIIMS Bhubaneshwar Director Ashutosh Mishra said they received a letter from the Khordha collector for the disposal of these 28 unclaimed bodies and the request will be complied with in the presence of CBI officers.

“AIIMS have 28 unclaimed dead bodies. They haven't received any claim from their relatives. We have received a letter from the Khordha collector for the disposal of these bodies. We have requested AIIMS to hand over these bodies to BMB for cremation. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, these bodies will be handed over to BMC in the presence of CBI officers. BJC will cremate them as per the procedure defined for unclaimed bodies,” Mishra said while speaking with ANI.
The Odisha train accident, which took place four months back, claimed over 297 lives. Out of the deceased, 28 bodies remain unclaimed. The civic body thus issued a standard operating procedure for scientifically disposing of the remains of the 28 people whose rightful claimants were not found.

The tragic incident which happened on June 2 involved three trains-- Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, the Howrah-bound Shalimar Express and a goods train. CBI took over the case at the request of the Ministry of Railways. Railways suspended 7 of its employees, including three employees arrested by the CBI on the charge of dereliction of duty leading to the triple train crash in Odisha.
