Bangla Bandh Tomorrow:  The West Bengal government on Tuesday urged the people not to participate in the Bangla Bandh tomorrow called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the alleged use of violence by Kolkata police on the Nabanna Abhijaan protestors. Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee, Alapan Bandopadhyay said that the government will not allow the state-wide shutdown called by the saffron camp.

Earlier today, the state unit of BJP called for a 12-hour Bengal bandh in opposition to the alleged police brutalities on the students of the Chhatra Samaj, who were carrying out the 'Nibanna' March. Kolkata Police could be seen lathi charging and using water cannons to deter the protestors, who were demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and justice for the Kolkata rape-murder victim.

"The government will not allow any bandh on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in it. All steps shall be taken to ensure that normal life is unaffected," Alapan Bandopadhyay said as quoted by TOI.

Protestors and police clashed at various places in Kolkata and nearby Howrah on Tuesday after city police used force to chase them away. Clashes erupted when the protestors, mostly members of Pashchimbanga Chhtra Samaj and BJP, tried to break away from the barricades to reach the West Bengal secretariat.

The agitators came face to face with the police at MG Road, Hastings Road and areas near the Princep Ghat alongside Santragachi and Howrah Maidan. According to reports several protestors and a few cops sustained injuries in the violent clashes.

BJP Demands Release Of Detained Protestors

BJP demanded the immediate release of the protesting students detained by the Kolkata Police following the skirmishes on the city road. Hitting out at the authorities, state BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar alleged them of unleashing violence on the student agitation.

"The police and Mamata Banerjee have unleashed violence on the student agitation. They have lathi-charged and used tear gas as well as water cannons on the democratic peaceful protest. So opposing this we have called for a 12-hour bandh in Bengal tomorrow. Our demand is simple that the students who have been arrested by the police should be released," he said.
