Around 1000 Indian students returned to the country from Bangladesh through various means, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday, as Dhaka continues to face violent anti-quota protests. Over 100 people have reportedly lost lives in the 'bloody' protests which erupted earlier this week.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that MEA is 'fully focused on ensuring safety and well-being of the Indians in Bangladesh.'

Indian missions in the violence-marred country are in touch with the authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian residents there, the ministry said.

"Thus far, 778 Indian students have returned to India through various land ports. In addition, around 200 students have returned home by regular flight services through Dhaka and Chittagong airports," it said.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing violent clashes as students protest against the job quota system implemented by the Sheikh Hasina-led government. These protests, which began weeks ago, have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 90 individuals, although the exact number remains unclear.

In response to the escalating violence, Bangladeshi authorities have enforced a nationwide curfew to manage the ongoing clashes between protesters and police forces.

"Appreciate the concern of families and well-wishers of Indian nationals in Bangladesh. MEA is fully focused on ensuring their safety and well-being," S. Jaishankar stated in a post on X.

On Friday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal estimated the number of Indian nationals in Bangladesh to be around 15,000. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assured that the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, along with the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna, are actively assisting in the safe return of Indian nationals.

"In coordination with the local authorities, measures are being taken by the High Commission and the Assistant High Commissions to facilitate safe travel to the border crossing points along the India-Bangladesh international border," the MEA stated.

"The MEA is also coordinating with civil aviation, immigration, land ports, and BSF authorities to ensure a smooth passage for our citizens," it added.

The MEA further mentioned that the Indian High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are maintaining regular contact with over 4,000 students still in various universities in Bangladesh, providing them with necessary assistance.
