BBMP Corruption Case: A contractor decided to fight a corrupt Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) engineer, who demanded bribe to pass a pending bill. HV Yarappa Reddy, executive engineer of the C V Raman Nagar Division, BBMP, was caught red-handed by the Lokayukta police while allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a contractor to process a pending bill.
Lokayukta sleuths on Wednesday arrested a senior official of the civic body for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh.
The complainant, Hemanth GM, had approached the Lokayukta with a complaint that the engineer had demanded a bribe in exchange for clearing his pending bill.
Acting on the complaint, the Lokayukta police laid a trap and apprehended the accused during the transaction.
Officials said the bribe amount of Rs 10 lakh was seized and kept in safe custody for further legal proceedings. The accused has been taken into custody and is being interrogated.
A Reminder Of Karnataka's "Cut Money Scandal"
The corruption in Karnataka's civic boy is an open secret. Earlier, it created a huge political outrage after then Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa was caught in a huge row after a contractor killed himself. He blamed the minister in his last phone messages, alleging corruption.
What Was The Case?
A civil contractor, 37-year-old Santosh Patil's body was found in a lodge in Udupi. In WhatsApp messages to his friends and top leaders in the government, Patil had highlighted the bribe demand, naming then minister Eshwarappa. He had made him "solely responsible" for his death.
"I am taking this decision, keeping my aspirations aside. I request with folded hands to our Prime Minister, Chief Minister, our beloved lingayat leader BSY (then CM BS Yediyurappa) and everybody else to extend a helping hand to my wife and kids," His last message read.
