The Beating Retreat Ceremony of the Border Security Force (BSF), also known as the flag-lowering ritual, at the Wagah-Attari border in Amritsar, Punjab, and the Hussainiwala border in Firozpur, will resume on Tuesday, May 21, after a 12-day suspension. The ritual was suspended on May 9 following the Indian airstrike (Operation Sindoor) that took place on May 7.

Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, a war-like situation emerged between India and Pakistan, prompting the suspension of the Retreat ceremony at key Joint Check Posts along the India-Pakistan border. These included the Wagah-Attari post in Amritsar, Hussainiwala in Firozpur, and Sadqi Chowki in Fazilka.

With tensions between India and Pakistan gradually easing, it has been decided to resume the Retreat ceremony at the three key Joint Check Posts along the international border—Wagah-Attari in Amritsar, Hussainiwala in Firozpur, and Sadqi Chowki in Fazilka—starting Tuesday at 6 PM.

Anumit Singh Heera Sodhi, a prominent local youth leader from the BJP, urged the public to attend the ceremony in large numbers to express their patriotic fervor and encourage the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel with their presence and good wishes.

What Is a Beating Retreat Ceremony?

The Beating Retreat ceremony is a daily military tradition jointly observed by the security forces of India (Border Security Force) and Pakistan (Pakistan Rangers) since 1959. Held at designated Joint Check Posts along the border, the ceremony features elaborate drill movements, patriotic displays, and concludes with a symbolic handshake between the Indian Guard Commander and their Pakistani counterpart, signifying mutual respect and discipline despite underlying tensions.

In addition to the ceremonial handshake, the Indian national flag is lowered every evening by BSF troops in perfect synchronization with the Pakistan Rangers at three key Joint Check Posts: Attari in Amritsar district (opposite Pakistan’s Wagah), Hussainiwala in Firozpur district (across from Ganda Singh Wala), and Sadqi in Fazilka district.

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) had scaled down this daily military ceremony on April 24, in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which tragically claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists.
