Bengal Bandh News: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called the Bangla Bandh on Wednesday following the alleged use of violence by Kolkata police on the Nabanna Abhijaan protestors. On Tuesday, the protestors and police clashed at various places in Kolkata and nearby Howrah after the city police used force to chase them away. Clashes erupted when the protestors, mostly members of Pashchimbanga Chhtra Samaj and the BJP, tried to break away from the barricades to reach the West Bengal secretariat.

The rally in the day was called for demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the wake of the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at state-run R G Kar Medical College. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, who led the march, fell ill after being exposed to teargas and subsequently left the scene.

According to news agency PTI, the police alleged that they have used force and arrested 94 protestors. “The state president has warned the Police Commissioner to explain their stand on the arrests and ensure the unconditional release of the Bengali students who were detained from various locations during the march to Nabanna,” a state BJP leader said.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the police resorted to "brutal repression" on peaceful participants of the 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally and threatened to stall West Bengal if the "brutalities" by state administration were not stopped.

"Police are using water cannon on peaceful protestors at Santragachi, burst tear gas shells on the students at Howrah Bridge, lathicharged them at College Street. Please stop these brutalities immediately," the senior BJP leader told reporters.
