Jagran State Bureau, Kolkata | The West Bengal CID made serious claims in court regarding Sumit Roy, personal assistant of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, who was arrested in a land scam case. According to the investigating agency, Sumit confessed to the crime during interrogation. The CID claimed that not only Roy, but a larger gang is behind the case.

Roy Helped To Uncover Financial Transactions: CID

The probe agency said other members of the gang and their financial transactions are being investigated. In court documents, the CID stated that Roy has also offered to assist investigators in recovering the money based on financial transactions uncovered during the investigation.

Based on his information, the roles of other gang members and the route of the money transactions are being investigated, it added. Investigators are also looking into the large sums deposited in a specific bank account between 2018 and 2021.

All aspects are being investigated, including who deposited the money, the source of the funds, and where the money was later transferred, the CID said.

Roy Arrested After SC Rejects Anticipatory Bail Plea

Earlier, on September 10, the West Bengal CID arrested Banerjee's aide Roy from a party office-cum-residence in south Kolkata, shortly after the Supreme Court refused him anticipatory bail in a case involving alleged illegal sale of government land in Salboni.

The arrest triggered a political confrontation, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP leaders targeting Banerjee over Roy's alleged role in the case, while the rebel TMC camp questioned the timing of the arrest and the other faction accused the government of pursuing "revenge politics".

What Is Land Scam Case?

The case stems from allegations that government land in Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district was illegally converted and sold using forged documents. Former TMC MLA Sujoy Hazra was earlier arrested in connection with the case. Investigators subsequently traced financial transactions allegedly linked to the case to Roy following Hazra's interrogation.
