Bengal Covid-19 Cases: West Bengal has reported a rise in Covid-19 infections, with 26 new cases recorded on Sunday. This has pushed the total number of active cases in the state to 622, as per the latest health department data.
Amid the growing concern, two infants — a three-month-old and a one-year-old — have tested positive for Covid-19 in Kolkata. The Indian Express report cited hospital sources as stating that, both children were brought to a private hospital on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass with complaints of high fever, cold and cough. Doctors suspected Covid and carried out tests, which confirmed the infection. The babies have since been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
In response to the rising number of cases, Calcutta Medical College and Hospital has set up dedicated counters for Covid testing. The state health department has also sent a detailed report to the central government, listing the current number of patients, their condition, and the steps taken so far.
While only one case was reported in Kolkata at the beginning of May, the situation has changed significantly over the past few weeks. By the end of the month, the city witnessed a sharp increase, along with one reported death linked to the virus.
Though most recent cases are showing mild symptoms, private hospitals have increased the number of beds reserved for Covid patients.

Health workers have been directed to monitor symptoms of Covid-19 while continuing regular surveillance for dengue and malaria. Anyone showing signs of flu or severe respiratory illness is to be isolated. Two isolation wards have already been readied at ID Hospital as a precautionary step.
