West Bengal government has finally accepted the Centre's new Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, after months of deadlock and implementation refusal. The officials said that the directions have been issued to upload information of 82,000 waqf properties across the state on the central portal, UMEED.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the deadline to upload the details is December 5, the officials added. West Bengal Minority Development Department Secretary PB Salim wrote a letter to all the district magistrates on Thursday, directing to upload the district-wise data.
The move is in sharp contrast to what CM Mamata Banerjee has been promising. On April 9, she addressed an event where she said that she would not allow the implementation of Waqf Acr and termed it a 'divide and rule' policy.
"They have been living here for centuries. It is my duty to protect them," she had said. West Bengal had also come to light after protests broke out in the state, following the Bill being tabled in the Parliament.
She had said, "I will not allow the Waqf Amendment Act to come into effect in Bengal. I will not allow them to divide and rule. We have 33 percent Muslims here. They have been living here for centuries. It is my duty to protect them."
The West Bengal government had even moved to court against the law. However, it did not get a favourable verdict.

Section 3B of the amended Act stipulates December 5 as the deadline for uploading the information on all registered waqf properties across the nation. The mutawallis (waqf property managers) are directed to upload the data.
The Waqf Bill was passed form both Houses of the Parliament by April 4. The act came into force on April 8 after the government issued a notification, following the President's assent.
