Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday stated that the Election Commission has insulted the Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen by sending him notice during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Banerjee further alleged that the poll body has targeted the prominent figures of the state, adding that the move was "politically motivated". However, the Election Commission clarified that the notice issued to Amartya Sen was the result of a technical discrepancy, adding that Sen has not been asked to be physically present.

While addressing a rally on Tuesday, Banerjee alleged that the “BJP–ECI nexus” has tried to defame the prominent personalities. “This is so sad. They have sent a notice to Amartya Sen, who won the Nobel Prize for India and brought global recognition to the country. They have sent notices to cricketer Mohammed Shami and to actor Dev. It is an attempt to discredit and harass everyone,” Banerjee stated.

“A person like Amartya Sen, who is the pride of the nation and has earned its respect has been disrespected,” the TMC MP asserted. "In the name of SIR, BJP-ECI nexus is targeting people of Bengal. When I came here, I got to know Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, who brought global recognition to our country, has been served hearing notice," Banerjee added.

However, the Election Commission has clarified that the notice was issued due to a technical glitch, adding that the economist was not required to appear before the commission for a hearing. Earlier last week, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the poll body to halt the revision process, questioning the timing and planning.

However, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that her concerns were fictional, further stating that the revision process was necessary. The Election Commission has maintained that the SIR was required to make the electoral process more transparent.
