Bengal SIR: BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) was opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the poll-bound West Bengal to protect “crores of unauthorised voters". While addressing a crowd in Paschim Medinipur's Mohanpur, Majumdar claimed that while the people of Bengal "welcomed" the SIR, the process was opposed by the TMC leaders. The Union Minister further stated that the voters have already decided to “throw out” the TMC government.

Majumdar also claimed that the reason behind TMC's protest against the Election Commission was their fear of losing the unauthorised voters who got the crucial documents with the help of ruling party leaders. “The SIR has been welcomed by every bonafide citizen of West Bengal, but only the TMC ministers and other leaders are opposing it. Why? Because they now know that, with the deletion of names of crores of unauthorised voters who infiltrated into the country and got ration cards and Aadhar documents with the help of TMC leaders, they will be thrown out now,” Majumdar was quoted as saying by PTI.

The BJP leader also stated that the people of Bengal seek change in the upcoming Assembly polls, further claiming that the vote share of TMC has significantly reduced in recent times. Earlier last week, the TMC leaders, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, slammed the SIR by claiming that it was being conducted to delete the voters of the marginalised groups.

Banerjee also claimed that such a complex process could not be finished in a short span of time, accusing the BJP of interference in the development works. However, the Election Commission clarified that the BLOs have been directed to visit every house for verification, adding that the process was held as per the rules and regulations.
