West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that she would move to the Supreme Court on Tuesday against the ongoing special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in the state.

Mamata has constantly raised issues like alleged flaws in the enumeration process, deaths of BLOs due to work pressure, and coercing the ill to stand in queues, among others. She said, "We're moving court on Tuesday against 'inhumane treatment' of people, deaths during SIR."

"Terminally ill people have been forced to stand in queues during SIR to prove they're legitimate voters," CM Mamata was quoted by news agency PTI.

Lashing out at the opposition BJP, she said, "BJP doesn't believe in any religion, only believes in spreading lies."

This comes a day after she wrote a third letter to the Election Commission (EC) highlighting the aforementioned issues.

On January 4, the chief minister urged the poll body to halt the poll roll revision process, claiming that the results had many irregularities and that it would cause "irreversible" damage to the voter list of West Bengal.

She asserted that it would result in "large-scale disenfranchisement of eligible voters.

After CM Mamata, West Bengal LoP and BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, also wrote a letter to the EC, calling the concerns of the chief minister 'fictional'. In a letter dated January 5, Adhikari stated, "The SIR is not, as she falsely portrays, an ‘unplanned, ill-prepared, and ad hoc’ farce, but a meticulously orchestrated national initiative aimed at purging the system of duplicate, bogus, and ineligible entries that have inflated voter lists and undermined the sanctity of our democracy."

"It is clear as daylight that the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s outrage stems from the counterfactual reality: the SIR is proving devastatingly counterproductive to her party's prospects in the upcoming 2026 Assembly Elections," he added.
