Bengal SIR: After Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has reportedly begun its preparation to conduct Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, leading to a political slugfest.

In a latest development over SIR in Bengal, on one hand, the deputy election commissioner and senior Election Commission officials are holding meetings in the state, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a statement, displayed her strong protest against the SIR in the state.

Targeting Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Agarwal, CM Benejee said, ‘SIR is just the front, and NRC is behind it’. Mamata warned that a large-scale movement would take place if the SIR takes place in the state.

The leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has written to the Election Commission of India, urging for an action against Mamata Banerjee for intimidating officials, and claimed that after SIR, nearly 1 crore votes will be deleted from Bengal’s Electoral list.

In a sharp attack against Agarwal, Mamata on Thursday said, “There are several complaints against the CEO of West Bengal himself, which I will reveal at the right time. But I hope he does not overreact. He has been threatening many officers."

The SIR is likely to take place soon, setting the political stage ahead of the Bengal election 2026. The deputy election commissioner and senior EC officials have held several meetings with district election officers, electoral registration officers (EROs), and booth-level officers (BLOs) to fully understand the situation on the ground.

Calling the process a ‘fraud’, Mamata alleged that the state government and the public are excluded from the process. “Under the guise of SIR, there is an attempt to delete genuine voters. How can the Assam government send notifications to voters in Bengal?" she asked, condemning the process as “a conspiracy to implement NRC". She warned that the BJP was “playing with fire".

In a strong reaction to Mamata’s comment, BJP leader Adhikari demanded action against Benerjee, stating, “I urge the Election Commission of India to take immediate cognisance of this matter and initiate stringent action against Mamata Banerjee for her repeated attempts to undermine the democratic process and intimidate constitutional officers. Furthermore, I request that Central Security be provided to the CEO at his office and residence to ensure his safety, given the clear and present danger posed by these threats in a state where lawlessness prevails."
