Bengaluru Airport Parking Rules:Traffic congestion remains a significant issue for residents of Bengaluru. Starting December 8, travellers heading to Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, in private vehicles will only have eight minutes to pick up passengers at the arrivals zone. Exceeding this time will result in a penalty.
Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL), which manages airport operations, is implementing stricter controls at the kerbside, citing that long waiting times and bottlenecks have been exacerbating traffic issues around the airport.
As reported by the Times of India, the airport has been grappling with private car and taxi drivers who often wait much longer than necessary, creating what airport officials term “artificial congestion”. These queues impede the flow of traffic at the terminal, causing frustration for both passengers and drivers. BIAL has concluded that the only solution to this problem is to enforce time limits and impose penalties for violations.
Under the new rules, if a vehicle stays between 8 and 13 minutes in the pick-up zone, a fee of Rs 150 will apply. For vehicles that overstay between 13 and 18 minutes, the charge will rise to Rs 300. Any vehicle that remains beyond 18 minutes will be towed to the nearest police station, and the owner will be required to pay both fines and towing charges. The new fees are intended to discourage misuse of the pick-up zone, which often becomes congested due to long waits and unauthorised stops.

These measures will be implemented from December 8, 2025, as part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow at arrivals and reduce the persistent bottlenecks that have plagued Bengaluru airport for years.
Under the new rules, private cars (white-board vehicles) will still be allowed free access to the designated pick-up lanes at both Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2) but only as long as they adhere to the time limit. Any vehicle that overstays or parks in an unauthorised area will incur charges.
Commercial vehicles will be subject to stricter regulations. Yellow-board taxis and electric cabs will be required to wait for passengers only in designated parking zones. The first 10 minutes of parking will remain complimentary. Taxis serving Terminal 1 must park in the P3 and P4 areas, while those servicing Terminal 2 should proceed to P2.
Taxis and commercial vehicles must park in the designated areas, with the first 10 minutes free. After picking up passengers, these vehicles should then proceed to the terminal exit.
In addition to the new pick-up charges, Bengaluru airport officials have observed numerous vehicles stopping in areas where they should not, such as at arrival gates, exit ramps, or along the roadside. These unauthorised stops contribute to traffic jams, so the airport is now urging travellers to use only official pick-up points and reliable taxi services.
BLR Airport is India's third-largest and fastest-growing airport serving approximately 130,000 passengers every day. A daily volume of roughly 100,000 vehicles traversing the airport's road network places significant strain on its landside facilities, particularly the kerbside (drop-off and pick-up lanes) in front of the terminals.
In response, the airport is reviewing and refining its processes to enhance the passenger experience, ease congestion and align with evolving needs and safety standards.
