The private taxi and bus association in Bengaluru are holding a strike today, September 11, to protest against the Karnataka government over inclusion in the Shakti scheme. Most of the private transportation in the city will remain shut today. The private players in the transport industry have alleged that they have been facing huge losses since the implementation of the Shakti scheme in the state. The Karnataka Shakti Scheme offers free bus travel for women in the southern state.

The protesting transport industry members earlier met the transport minister earlier and demanded compensation for their losses due to the Shakti Scheme. Ramalinga Reddy, the state transport minister of Karnataka, held discussions with the transport union on July 24, three days prior to the initially scheduled protest on July 24. In this discussion he assured the unions that out of their 30 demands, 28 will be met by the end of August.

He later said that he will first discuss the issue with the chief minister and then proceed further. After not hearing from the government, the unions have decided to go on a one-day strike on September 11
