Bengaluru: The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has proposed the construction of a new flyover that will connect Nagawara to the national highway leading to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). According to BDA sources, the authority’s board has given approval for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR).

Hebbal Flyover Junction Ramp

The BDA is also exploring the possibility of repurposing some of the 11 massive pillars erected in 2019 for a previous ramp project that was halted midway due to objections from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). BMRCL had raised concerns about the ramp's alignment, stating it would interfere with future Metro lines. Now, the BDA plans to assess the feasibility of incorporating these unused pillars into the new flyover. The earlier project had already cost the authority Rs 25 crore, with the pillars constructed inside the tree park at the junction.

New Flyover From Nagawara To Kempegowda International Airport

The proposed flyover aims to ease traffic congestion for vehicles traveling from the Nagawara side towards Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). At present, traffic bottlenecks are common beneath the existing flyover, as vehicles heading to Tumakuru Road, KIA, and Mehkri Circle all converge on the same stretch.

The long-pending construction of an additional ramp at the junction has caused persistent traffic woes, particularly for commuters bound for Mehkri Circle and BEL Circle. To avoid the congestion, many motorists from the Nagawara side take inner roads through Kempapura and then use the service road near Esteem Mall to access the Hebbal flyover, further contributing to severe gridlock at the junction.

According to the TOI report, BDA source said, "Construction of the flyover and linking it with NH will provide seamless access for air passengers. The length of the flyover is unlikely to be more than a kilometre. Currently, NHAI is widening the road near the defence area (located close to Hebbal Lake); there is ample space to build the down ramp of the proposed flyover."
