Bengaluru Building Collapse: One more body was recovered from the debris of the under-construction building that collapsed in Babusapalya near Bengaluru's Hennur area following heavy rains on Tuesday, taking the death toll from the incident to six on Wednesday, the police informed.
A total of seven other people were rescued, bringing the number of rescued individuals to 13, news agency ANI reported. Rescue operations were on as many more were feared trapped under the debris.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, the police said. The accused have been identified as Bhuvan Reddy, the owner of the building, and Muniyappa, the contractor. Bhuvan's father Muniraju Reddy used to oversee the construction work of the building. Muniraju, who is the first accused in the case, has been reported absconding.
The police have booked the accused under Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 125 (A) (Act of endangering life or personal safety), 125 (B) (causing grievous hurt to another person), 270 (public nuisance), 3 (5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act.
Talking to media persons, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said, "The building collapse in Babusapalya was not caused by the ongoing rain in Bengaluru. This incident occurred due to unscientific and substandard construction work. A case will be registered against everyone responsible for this incident, including the owner, the construction contractor, and officials. The reason for the collapse is the construction of a tall building on a small plot."
The deceased have been identified as Harman (26), Tripal (35), Mohd Sahil (19), Sathya Raju (25), and Shankar. The injured individuals have been identified as Jagadevi (45), Rasheed (28), Nagaraju (25), Ramesh Kumar (28), and Ayaj. The injured are receiving treatment at Bengaluru North Hospital, while one is at Hosmat Hospital.
