Bengaluru News: Bengaluru police have arrested a 45-year-old Head of Department (HOD) of a reputed private college for allegedly sexually harassing a student under the guise of helping her with studies and attendance. The accused, identified as Sanjeev Kumar Mandal, was booked after a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) student filed a complaint at the Tilaknagar Police Station.
According to the complaint, Mandal invited the third-year student to his home for lunch on September 25, claiming that his wife and children would also be present. He had even spoken to the student’s mother, assuring her that her daughter would be safe. Believing his words, the student agreed to visit his home, as per a NDTV report.
However, when they reached his apartment, Mandal allegedly revealed that no one else was home. Despite the student’s hesitation, he convinced her to come inside, saying she would be safe. Once inside, he reportedly started asking personal questions and told her to end her relationship with her boyfriend. He also suggested that she move into a paying guest accommodation near his residence so she could visit him frequently to “clear doubts”.
The Times Of India report cited student further stating that, Mandal offered her refreshments, which she refused as she began to feel uncomfortable. He then allegedly told her that he could help her with attendance, marks and even money. Ignoring her objections, he reportedly touched her inappropriately.
During the incident, the student received a call from her friend. Though Mandal allegedly asked her not to answer, she informed her friend that she was at her teacher’s house. Using the call as an excuse, she managed to leave the apartment and return home. Later, she narrated the incident to her parents, who first approached the college management and then filed a police complaint.
The Tilaknagar police registered an FIR against Mandal on October 5, 2025, under Section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was later released on station bail.
