Bengaluru Crime News: In a horrifying incident in Basaveshwara Nagar late Tuesday night, a 28-year-old tenant allegedly doused his 45-year-old landlady with petrol and set her on fire after she refused to marry her daughter to him.
The victim, Geetha, who runs a grocery shop, is battling for life at Victoria Hospital with severe burns. The accused, Mutthu Abhimanyu, operated a tea stall in a portion of Geetha’s rented house, which consisted of one room and a toilet, jagran.com reported.
Police said Abhimanyu had proposed to Geetha’s 19-year-old daughter, a second-year BBA student. When the girl rejected him, he pressured Geetha to convince her daughter, but she too refused. Around 1 am on Tuesday, when the argument escalated, in a fit of rage, Abhimanyu poured petrol from a bottle he kept for emergencies and set Geetha ablaze.
Victim Geetha Batteling For Life
Hearing her screams, the daughter rushed to the spot, but Abhimanyu had fled. Neighbours helped rush Geetha to the hospital. The victim sustained 50 per cent injuries and is currently battling for life at Victoria Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
Geetha’s husband Vijay Kumar, a civil contractor, had passed away a few years ago. She lived alone with her daughter and managed the household.

According to a study by MEDICA, a journal of Clinical Medicine, Burns are a global public health problem, accounting for an estimated 180,000 deaths annually and the fourth most frequent type of injury worldwide.
The survival rate in burn cases depends on specialised care and infrastructure, and the availability of these two can improve the outcome. In developed cases, the survival rate for a 50 per cent burn is 75 to 90 per cent, while in developing nations, the rate is comparatively low.
