Bengaluru News: Officials have proposed a new road-metro corridor along the outer ring road (ORR) in Bengaluru to improve transportation in city. This project, which will stretch 32.15 km from J P Nagar to Hebbal, aims to become the longest flyover in the city. It is similar to the existing 5-km double-decker flyover on the Ragigudda-Silk Board stretch.

According to a Deccan Herald report, the elevated road section will also include an 8 km segment on Magadi Road, with an estimated cost of Rs 9,800 crore. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar recently reviewed the proposal, visiting key locations such as Hebbal, BEL Road, Summanahalli and Goraguntepalya junction. He stated, "We will construct an elevated road alongside future Metro projects, similar to the design on Ragigudda Road. This approach avoids the high costs associated with acquiring properties for road widening."

Karnataka Deputy CM’s Review

Officials noted that both lines of the Namma Metro's third phase, which covers over 40 km, will feature double-decker designs. The feasibility study for this initiative is nearly complete, although adjustments to the design have delayed the tendering process for Metro civil works. The project received central approval in August last year.

Namma Metro: Goraguntepalya Line Redesign

To implement the double-decker concept, a major redesign is planned for the 32.15-km line between JP Nagar 4th Phase and Kempapura, particularly at Goraguntepalya. Instead of an interchange station at Peenya, officials propose a new Metro station near the junction. This change is expected to reduce construction costs and shorten the line by 300 metres. Passengers will benefit from travelators connecting the new station to both Peenya and Goraguntepalya.

While the redesign may cause temporary inconvenience for Metro users, it aims to alleviate traffic at Goraguntepalya, especially for vehicles travelling between Dr Rajkumar Memorial and BEL Circle. The double-decker project is expected to create a signal-free corridor, eliminating the need for detours. The proposal includes acquiring land from the Defence Ministry and the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute. "This will be a game-changer," Shivakumar stated during the review meeting.
