Bengaluru Metro: The Karnataka government is considering expanding the Bengaluru Metro Rail network to several areas, including Hoskote in the east, Nelamangala in the west and Bidadi in the southwest. This announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Wednesday.
During a session in the Karnataka Assembly, Shivakumar responded to a question from MLA Sharath Bache Gowda regarding heavy traffic congestion on the Old Madras Road between KR Puram and Hoskote. He acknowledged the traffic issues and stated that a comprehensive survey is underway to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed extensions.
"I am aware of the traffic challenges and am planning for it," Shivakumar said. "Our government, along with Namma Metro, will consider the MLA's request seriously." He confirmed that a report is being prepared to assess the potential for extending the Metro Rail to Hoskote, Nelamangala and Bidadi. He emphasised the need for better connectivity, noting that around 10,000 people commute daily from Kolar to Bengaluru for work.
In addition to the Metro expansion plans, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has partnered with SUN Mobility to provide EV battery-swapping facilities for commuters. These stations, strategically located in parking areas and auto stands, offer efficient and eco-friendly transportation options.
In the past month, these stations have supported 1,25,000 km of travel, serving 19,000 vehicles. On average, each BMRCL station serves 2,800 vehicles, including 2,300 2-wheelers and 500 3-wheelers. With seven stations already operational and 12 more planned, BMRCL aims to expand this initiative to improve last-mile connectivity and promote sustainable urban mobility across the city.
