Bengaluru News: A woman and her eight-year-old son lost their lives after a private college bus hit them while they were crossing a road in central Bengaluru on Monday morning. The incident took place in the Vivek Nagar area during peak school hours, police said.
The victims were identified as 37-year-old Sangeetha and her son Parth, residents of Ejipura. The accident occurred between 6.45 AM and 7.15 AM when Sangeetha was walking her son to school. She worked at Army Public School, where Parth was also a student.
According to the police, the mother and child were crossing Srinivagilu Main Road near the Vivek Nagar bus stop when a college bus struck them. The impact was severe and both died on the spot before help could arrive.
The bus involved in the accident bore the registration number KA-51-AL-7920 and belonged to Jain (Deemed-to-be) University’s Global Campus in Kanakapura. A senior police officer said the bus was carrying lecturers at the time. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver was attempting to take a U-turn and failed to notice the pedestrians crossing the road.
After the accident, the driver abandoned the bus and fled the scene. Police believe he may have panicked after seeing local residents gather at the spot. Teams have been formed to trace and arrest him.
As per a Times of India report, an eyewitness living in the area told the police that Sangeetha walked her son to school every morning at around the same time. She said the bus hit them suddenly, giving them no chance to escape.
Ashok Nagar traffic police reached the spot soon after receiving information. The bus was seized and later removed to clear traffic congestion. The bodies were shifted to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway.
