Tesla has quietly rolled out what is being viewed as its first structured internship programme in India. The move is being seen as an early sign of the electric vehicle maker’s growing interest in the Indian market, even as its retail and manufacturing plans remain unannounced.

The company is hiring sales interns in eight cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Ahmedabad. The openings have quickly gained attention online, especially among students and young professionals keen to work with the global EV brand.

Customer experience at the centre

According to the role details, Tesla’s sales interns will play a key role in shaping customer interactions. Rather than focusing only on selling vehicles, the position places emphasis on guiding customers through Tesla’s products, values and long-term mission of promoting sustainable energy.

Interns will assist customers visiting showrooms, help explain vehicle features, and introduce them to Tesla’s technology and services.

Hands-on role with real responsibilities

Tesla has described the internship as practical and immersive. Interns will be expected to engage walk-in customers, create and manage customer profiles, arrange test drives and update sales information using Tesla’s internal systems.

They will also need to stay informed about electric vehicle trends and local government incentives. Following company policies and customer service standards is listed as a core responsibility.

Who Tesla is looking for

While prior experience in customer-facing roles is listed as desirable, Tesla appears to be prioritising soft skills. Clear communication, attention to detail, ethical selling and flexibility with work hours are key requirements.

A valid driving licence and a clean driving record are mandatory, highlighting the importance of test drives and direct customer engagement.

A signal of future expansion

Industry watchers see this hiring move as a strategic step. Though Tesla has so far taken a cautious approach to India, multi-city sales internships suggest early groundwork for future retail and customer operations.
