Bengaluru Namma Metro Update: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has reportedly cancelled the plan to build a foot overbridge to connect the Cantonment metro and railway stations in the Shivajinagar region. The authority has instead decided to operate an electric vehicle service when the Pink Line becomes fully operational. While the local leaders stated that the move will affect the ridership, the BMRCL stated that the decision was taken due to several hindrances. The Pink Line metro line will provide convenience to thousands of commuters on a daily basis by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion.

While providing details, the authority stated that the plan to build an overbridge was cancelled after the Urban Development Department (UDD) rejected its proposal to acquire land and widen three approach roads. While the location of the Cantonment metro station was initially planned opposite the railway station, it was later shifted to Abdul Bari’s School ground due to technical reasons, reported the Deccan Herald.

The authority also promised to build an elevator after the commuters pointed out the distance between the metro and railway station; however, the objection from the UDD has led to cancellation of the plan. The officials stated that there were several safety concerns regarding the foot overbridge. “It is essential to widen these roads to build the FOB, but a fund crunch is a hurdle,” a senior BMRCL official was quoted as saying by the DH.

“There are also safety concerns. The bridge will be considerably long with no midway ramps. Passengers with luggage may find it difficult to use,” he added. However, Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad stated that the last-mile connectivity should not be avoided, adding that the ridership is likely to be affected by the latest move.
