Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is reportedly considering expanding its operations into cargo transportation. The move from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is seen as an effort to increase its non-fare revenue. The BMRCL is planning to expand its operations beyond passenger services and is looking to collaborate with logistics and e-commerce firms.

BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao stated that a detailed roadmap for the project will be prepared after meetings with the concerned stakeholders, reported Money Control. The officials stated that this move will ensure more profit for the Bengaluru metro and will also boost the financial activities in the Silicon City.

The reports suggest that the BMRCL is planning to expand the metro's efficiency to enhance urban logistics and its financial activities. Byappanahalli is likely to be the hub for this project, as most of the logistics business in the city is nearby this area. Apart from this, the metro connectivity to Byappanahalli had already given a boost to the real estate sector of the area.

BMRCL Managing Director stated that the project is likely to be profitable for both the metro and the logistics companies. He added that the financial activities of this sector will significantly improve as the metro is the fastest transport option in Bengaluru. Apart from this, it will also generate more revenue for the metro and will boost the maintenance projects.

BMRCL is expected to hold a meeting with private logistics firms to finalise the strategy and further the roadmap. BMRCL Managing Director also stated that the project will benefit the residents of the city in numerous ways, including improved last-mile connectivity, less traffic congestion, and lowered air and noise pollution in the city.

He also stated that a similar approach was taken by Delhi Metro to enhance the financial activities in the national capital. While continuing the regular services, the Bengaluru metro is planning to utilise the last coach of certain metro trains to carry products during the non-peak hours.
