The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is upgrading its depots to accommodate additional rakes as it prepare to cater expanding Namma Metro Network. The work is being carried out to house additional trains, particularly on Purple and Green Lines, which will receive 21 new trains in the coming months.

Currently, depot located at Peenya and another depot situated at Kadugodi-Whitefield supports train operations on green and purple line respectively. A depot at Baiyappanahalli also contributes to the metro operation support. To accommodate metros set to run of upcoming yellow line between RV Road and Bommasandra, a metro depot has been constructed at Hebbagodi.

Namma Metro Depot Upgrade: BMRCL Redesigned Baiyappanahalli depot

At a cost of Rs 249.19 crore, major redevelopment work has already been completed at the Baiyappanahalli depot. With this upgrade, the depot becomes BMRCL’s first facility to feature two-level structure.

The revamped Baiyappanahalli depot is crucial for Namma Metro's operations, supporting 16 trains on the Outer Ring Road stretch and 21 trains on the Airport Line. Strategically located at the intersection of both corridors, it will manage train operations until the new Shettigere depot near the airport becomes operational.

According to BMRCL officials, the Peenya depot is undergoing a series of upgrades to support the additional train sets.

“Presently, the Baiyappanahalli depot services the 43.49-kilometre-long Purple Line connecting Challaghatta to Whitefield. However, once the remodeling is complete, the responsibility for Purple Line maintenance will be divided between the Kadugodi and Challaghatta depots, as the upgraded Baiyappanahalli depot begins handling Airport Line operations,” A BMRCL official was quoted by The Hindu.
