Banashankari Junction skywalk: After years of delay, the Namma Metro has finally initiated the process of building the much-awaited circular skywalk at the Banashankari Junction in the southern part of Bengaluru, as per the Deccan Herald report.

The circular skywalk will connect the Banashankari metro station to the Banashankari Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC). According to the officials, the construction of the skywalk will start by the end of the year and will be completed in 15 months, providing an easy walking experience for pedestrians at one of the busiest intersections in Bengaluru.

The project will involve redesigning the entire intersection, removing trees, and relocating utility lines to make way for the skywalk.

The project is one of its kind in Bengaluru with landscaping on both roads, resting pods, skywalk levels, and commercial outlets. In a step of progress, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation  (BMRCL) recently invited tenders from companies that fulfill the criteria to design and construct the skywalk.

Why is skywalk necessary?

The circular skywalk is necessary as the distance between the Banashankari Metro Station and the TTMC is 200 metres, and there is no direct connectivity between them.

Since the metro station was opened in 2017, the passengers have been facing the problem of switching between the two transit hubs. For almost eight years, passengers have been crossing the busy road, which is not only time-consuming and exhausting but also risky.

Why the project got delayed?

The project was delayed due to a dispute between the BMRCL and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) over funding and construction. Chief Public Relations Officer of BMRCL, BL Yashvanath Chavan, said that the project was to be taken up by BBMP initially, but the BMRCL has now been asked to take the responsibility.

Details of the project

The skywalk at Banashankari junction will be circular in shape with ramps covering all corners of the intersection. It will have a length of 280 metres and a width of 6 metres. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 40-45 crore.
