Bengaluru News: As 2024 comes to a close, the excitement to welcome the New Year is palpable across Bengaluru. With the city gearing up for the celebrations, the government and police have implemented extensive security measures. MG Road, a popular gathering spot where over a lakh people gather every year around midnight, will see more than 2,000 police personnel deployed to ensure safety.
In addition to regular security arrangements, Bengaluru Police has imposed a ban on whistling and made masks mandatory in public places for the New Year's Eve celebrations.
Special lighting arrangements have been set up along Brigade Road, Church Street, Indiranagar, HSR Layout, and Koramangala to enhance safety. In Koramangala, over 1,000 additional personnel will be deployed to manage the increased crowd. A mini control room will be set up to monitor CCTV footage, with 150 cameras installed in sensitive areas. To control traffic, all flyovers will remain closed, but metro and bus services from MG Road will run until 2 am.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has introduced a Rs 500 fine for individuals harassing women, and such offenders will be handed over to the police. Security personnel will be stationed in every metro coach to ensure passenger safety.
For added protection, the Rani Chennamma Special Squad will be on duty, along with 12 safety islands dedicated to women’s security. Watchtowers will be set up, and healthcare facilities will be available to the public during the celebrations.
These measures come after the unfortunate events of the 2017 New Year celebrations when several women were molested and harassed on MG Road. Despite a large police presence, law enforcement struggled to maintain control as revelers flooded the streets. Former Home Minister G Parameswara had assured that sufficient police personnel were available, though the incident remained controversial.
This year, Bengaluru aims to ensure a safer and more enjoyable New Year's Eve for all.
