Bengaluru Potholes Woes: Amid ongoing criticism over pothole repairs in Bengaluru, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday defended the government’s efforts to restore the city’s damaged roads and unveiled a new action plan.

The Deputy Chief Minister reaffirmed that the Karnataka government is committed to “changing the perception” of the city’s deteriorating infrastructure. “Everything is getting done well. We are going to change the perception created by the media and the opposition about Bengaluru city. We are at it. We are doing our job,” news agency PTI quoted Shivakumar as saying.

DK Shivakumar Announces Rs 1,100 Crore Plan For Bengaluru

- The Deputy Chief Minister, who also oversees Bengaluru development, had just returned from a comprehensive inspection of the city’s roadworks, including pothole repairs.

- Responding to the public concerns over the quality of pothole patching and road maintenance work, Shivakumar said approximately 13,000 potholes have been filed so far, with another 4,000-5,000 identified for repair in a phased manner.

- DK Shivakumar further stated that he has instructed the officials to draft a Rs 1,100 crore action plan aimed at upgrading 550 km of Bengaluru arterial roads.

- Earlier, he urged public participation in reporting potholes across the city to ensure better identification and repair of potholes.

- This announcement comes after the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah set a 30-day deadline for making all roads motorable.

- Shivakumar underscored the scale of the challenge, saying, “We have more than 1.2 crore vehicles passing through Bengaluru every day, and more than 50 lakh vehicles coming from outside. Still, we are at it, and it is our job.”

No Decision Yet On ‘Congestion Tax’, Says DK Shivakumar

Dismissing reports about the introduction of a congestion tax in Bengaluru, DK Shivakumar said, “There have been some discussions and a few opinions shared, but we have not taken it up. We are not at that point yet.”
