Karnataka is considering renaming Bengaluru Rural as a part of its efforts to attract investment and enhance the district’s brand image, Times of India reported. It is anticipated that the cabinet will take up the proposal during its meeting at Namdi Hills this week.

It is argued that the ‘rural’ tag with the area creates a perception barrier hindering investment despite some of the crucial infrastructure in the state situation in Bengaluru Rural. The state infrastructure in the region includes Kempegowda International Airport, Devanahalli Business Park, and major electronics manufacturing hubs like Foxconn’s iPhone assembly plant.

The report, quoting a senior official familiar with the discussion, added, “A rebranding to Bengaluru North will align better with its economic profile and help position it as an investment-friendly destination.”

The Bengaluru Rural, which was carved out from the Bengaluru district in 1986, encompasses four taluks, Devanahalli, Hoskote, Doddaballapur, and Nelamangala. In 2007, Raamnagar was formed after splitting it further, which the state government recently renamed as Bengaluru South to strengthen its geographic association with the capital city.

It is intended to reflect proximity to Bengaluru city while indicating the urban and economic development potential of the area.

After the state cabinet’s approval, which is expected in the coming days, the proposal will be sent to the union government for final approval.
