Bengaluru Stampede: The Karnataka police reportedly warned the Siddaramaiah government about the possible risks involved in the victory celebrations of the maiden IPL title of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). According to a report, which cited a letter sent to the government, the senior police officials pointed out the lack of CCTV cameras, space and police personnel deployed at the Vidhan Soudha, where the felicitation event was held. Days after 11 people died in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the report suggests that the RCB event was given the clearance even after being warned of the possible consequences.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) MN Karibasavana Gowda had reportedly written a letter to the top bureaucrats on the day of the incident, warning them of overcrowding and lack of security, reported the Times Of India. In a letter to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) secretary G Sathyavathi, Gowda had warned that “lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha,” reported TOI. Gowda further stated that the lack of security personnel will make it difficult for the administrators to manage the crowd.

“Lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobast will be a problem,” Gowda's letter stated, reported TOI. The report also suggests that the letter was also shared with the then Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and the chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, but the senior authorities gave the clearance, reported TOI.

However, on June 5, a day after the tragic incident, the state home department suspended B Dayananda allegedly for lack of planning during the grand event. While the BJP leaders have demanded resignation from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, the Congress government has stated that the people responsible for the incident will not be spared.
